St. Pierre wins first at AAU Kids State

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team closed out their first season under head coach Steven Husk with plenty of reasons for optimism.  The Westerners will return their leading scorer, Reegan McKee, next season as they try to build on a seven-win season.

Jacobs named Academic All-State Team

It’s been a nice few weeks for Akron-Westfield senior Josie Jacobs.  She recently signed to continue her volleyball career at Mount Mercy and last week she was named to 2025 Iowa Basketball Coaches Association's Academic All-State team.

A dream come true

Akron-Westfield senior Allison Palmer is getting an opportunity to live out a dream.  On Feb. 26 she signed a letter of intent to swim at Morningside University next season.

Husk recaps first season

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team had their season end on Feb. 17 after a 56-37 loss to Gehlen Catholic in the Class 1A District playoffs.  “We started hot right away with 14 points in the first quarter,” said head coach Steven Husk. “We gave up 21 points and our defense was not as good as what it was in games past and then certainly our offense struggled after the first quarter.”

A-W youth wrestlers to compete in state tournament

The Akron-Westfield Youth Wrestling Club will be busy at the Iowa AAU Kids State Tournament, Iowa Super Pee Wee State Championship and AAU Girl’s State Championship.

Swancutt qualifies for state

For the second year in a row, Matthew Swancutt is headed to the state bowling tournament.  On Feb. 18, Swancutt qualified for state with a 637 series in 2A IHSAA Qualifying Meet in Denison.

Morrow finishes 8th in state

Conner Morrow finished his season with a spot on the podium as he took home an eighth-place finish at the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.

When the Akron-Westfield girls basketball team takes the floor next season, they will have a new coach calling the plays for the first time in nearly three decades.

Henrich competes in state swim meet

Akron-Westfield senior Hunter Henrich closed out his high school swimming career at the IHSAA State Meet in Iowa City on Feb. 14-15.

Swimming for Sioux City, Henrich finished 21st in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.21 seconds and 30th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.12 seconds.

A-W girls basketball falls to Gehlen

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team ended the regular season and had to quickly turn the page to the regional playoffs.

The Westerners were on the road Feb. 11 for the final game of the regular season against Trinity Christian, just two days before hosting a Class 1A-Region 3 game.

Jacobs signs to play volleyball at Mount Mercy

Akron-Westfield senior Josie Jacobs has signed to play college volleyball at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. “I looked around at schools I thought were interesting and had my major, pre-law,” said Jacobs. “I visited Waldorf and Mount Mercy, and I realized going to school in a bigger city was important and the facilities were really nice.”

Morrow & Schoenfelder focus on finishing

It’s no surprise Akron-Westfield wresters Conner Morrow and Nathan Schoenfelder earned a trip to the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.

A-W JV girls basketball keeps rolling

 

The Akron-Westfield JV girls basketball team continues to pile up the wins this season. The Westerners beat Lawton-Bronson 44-23 as Brooklyn Hughes scored 20 points and Tess Frerichs added 10 points in the victory.

A-W girls basketball gets key win against Gehlen

This is not the best time of the season to deal with injuries and illness as the post season is just over two weeks away. Unfortunately, that is the story for the Akron-Westfield girls basketball team.  The Westerners lost a pair of starters against Lawton-Bronson due to injuries and lost the game 53-47 on Jan. 27.
