Lennon returns to state with lofty goal

Josie Lennon is right where she wants to be.  The Akron-Westfield junior is headed back to the state wrestling tournament for a third straight season.  Lennon won the IGHSAU Class 1A Region 6 title in the 120-pound class on Jan. 31.

Lennon wins regional title

It’s been an outstanding season on the mat for Akron-Westfield wrestler Josie Lennon. The junior has dominated opponents this season with a 24-3 record in the 120-pound division.  The only thing missing from her resume was a trip to the state tournament.  On Jan.

A-W JV girls basketball wins two of three

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team is continuing to improve as the season moves along.  On Jan. 16, the Westerners picked up their seventh win of the season as they beat Alcester-Hudson on the road 30-16.

Morrow earns third place

Connor Morrow finished third place in the 106-pound division of the Herb Irgens Invitational. The event took place on Jan. 24-25 in Ida Grove. Morrow lost his semifinal match but rebounded to beat Leyton Elmquist of Audubon and Carver Hinz of Jesup to grab third place for the Westerners and earn 16 team points.

Four A-W girls wrestlers earn top 10 finishes

Josi Lennon continues to pick up wins for the Akron-Westfield girls wrestling team.  Lennon finished third in the 120-pound division as the Westerners took home 12th place as a team with 48 points in the Hinton/SBL Tournament on Jan. 25.

A-W boys basketball nearly pulls upset at RSM

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team knew they were in for a battle as traveled to 6th ranked Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.  Not only were the Hawks 9-3 on the season but they were coming off two straight losses and probably more than ready to take out some frustration on the Westerners.

A-W girls basketball drops close game to RSM

 

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team didn’t seem to be bothered by the hectic schedule over the last week.  The Westerners won four games in seven days and were looking to extend the streak to five in a row as they traveled to Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.

Morrow wins at Le Mars Tourney

The Akron-Westfield boys wrestling team finished in 10th place at the Le Mars Invite on Jan. 18. “We had a very good weekend,” said head coach John Sievert.

Lennon & Utesch keep winning for A-W

Khai Utesch and Josi Lennon continue to rack up wins for the Akron-Westfield girls wrestling team this season.  Both were credited with two wins as the Westerners lost to Sioux City North and Council Bluffs Lincoln on Jan. 16.

A-W girls basketball pick up pair of wins

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team was coming off a solid win against South O’Brien when they hosted winless MMCRU on Jan. 13, hoping to start a small winning streak and keep the Royals winless on the season.

A-W boys basketball gets back on winning track

The tough stretch of quality opponents continued for the A-W boys basketball team as they hosted MMCRU on Jan. 13.  Since returning from the holiday break, A-W has faced three opponents (Hinton, South O’Brien, and MMCRU) who have a combined 26-5 record.

A-W boys JV wrestling solid at Le Mars

The Akron-Westfield JV boys wrestling team took part in the Le Mars Tournament on Jan. 19 and had an impressive showing. Jayden Beyer and Thomas Brown both finished second in their weight class while Wyatt Dumas and Aken Marieu both took home third place honors.

Historic night for A-W Girls Wrestling

It’s been a historic season for the A-W girls wrestling program and on Jan. 9 they added another piece to the record book.  This season is the first for A-W girls program on the mat and they walked into the gym on Jan. 9 to host their first ever tournament in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Hoffman, Morrow lead A-W boys wrestling

The A-W boys wrestling team had a trio of wrestlers make it to the championship match in their weight class at the GTRA Invitational on Jan. 11.

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team knew when the holiday break was over, they had better be ready to shake off the rust quickly.  The Westerners had road games against Hinton and South O’Brien in a four-day span; those two teams were a combined a 12-3 on the season heading into the 2025 portion of the season.
