On the first day of 2025, Westfield residents celebrated the new year with a boil advisory issued by the Westfield Municipal Water Supply. The boil advisory was lifted on Jan. 3 at 1:16 p.m.

The Akron-Westfield School District is auctioning older signs that were once used in the district’s facilities. The A-W School Board authorized selling these signs to the highest bidder.

In October, Akron Care Center’s (ACC) Board unanimously approved hiring Generations Senior Management to complete an assessment of the facility. Generations is a company that provides market analysis and coaching for small rural nursing homes.

On Dec. 10 each year, Nobel Prize Day is celebrated to honor the prestigious awards created by Alfred Nobel. These awards recognize outstanding contributions in various fields, including Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace. In 2000, a prior Akron resident was awarded a Nobel Prize for his chemistry achievements.

Although American Education Week has passed, The Akron Hometowner wanted to express our deep appreciation for the Akron-Westfield Community School by commemorating A-W's teachers who have taught in Akron and Westfield the longest: Lisa Wolthuizen, Mike Baker, Kent Johnson, Tracy Frerichs, and LeAnne Tindall.

Since the early 1990s, the Akron-Westfield School and Immanuel Lutheran Church have received annual donations of handmade mittens. Joy Dirks, currently 89, was born and raised in Akron and has been hand-making mittens for the youth of the Akron-Westfield community since 1992.
