Jeremy Craighead, President of Security National Bank, is proud to announce the following promotion:

Helping Hands Thrift Shop in Akron raised $18,294.16 last year for the Akron Children’s Center to be used where needed. The thrift store operates on one-hundred percent volunteers and donations for the store.

Congratulations to AkronWestfield Jazz One for placing 4th at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships in a tough 2A class at Waukee, Iowa.

Betty Arreola of Peoples Bank in Akron successfully completed the Iowa Bankers Association Consumer Credit School, March 4-8, 2024, in Ankeny, Iowa.

            All fires governed by this section shall not be used for disposal of any yard waste or garbage.  You are NOT permitted to burn the following items:  grass, leaves, sticks, paper, stains, rubber products, plastics, treated wood, construction waste, etc.

Russ Lilly, seed representative and Cole Sitzmann, district sales manager, with Wyffels Hybrids donated $507 to Akron-Westfield FFA during FFA week. The two hung out at The Spot Espresso Bar & Cafe Feb. 21 and the donation was based on the sales that day.

The historic Akron Opera House got a new roof last week as part of the restoration project. Nohava Construction of Le Mars replaced the roof and added more insulation. Next step is restoration and/or replacement of upper-level windows with funds presently being raised to complete this step.

A long time resident of Akron and former teacher at the Akron and Akron-Westfield School, Wanda Philips, is celebrating her 93rd birthday on Sunday, March 31.

Albert E. Hoschler, American Legion Post 186, Akron, this year selected Daynen McKee, son of Jessie and Melissa McKee, of Akron, and Hayden Wahlberg, son of Jeff and Beckie Wahlberg of Westfield, as 2024 Iowa Boys State recipients.

The Spot Espresso Bar & Cafe in Akron was the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day March 17. In honor of the holiday, Reuben sandwiches, Irish Tacos and green drinks were available in addition to the regular menu. Along with food, you could play Bingo or make a coffee filter flower.

The 13 Akron-Westfield Individual Speech students did well at the state individual speech contest in Carroll March 9. The group brought home twelve 1 ratings, one 2 rating, and six advanced to the All-State Festival March 2 at the University of Iowa.
