AWEEF honors charter members and foundation donors

The Akron-Westfield Educational Education Foundation (AWEEF) honored its charter members and foundation donors by recognizing them during the halftime of the home girls basketball game Jan. 26.

National Honor Society inducts 32 A-W students

Thirty-two Akron-Westfield students were inducted into the National Honor Society Jan. 25. Sponsor is Emily Miller.

Celebrates 90 years

Ann Van Beek will be 90 on February 11, 2024. Her family would like to honor that celebration with birthday cards mailed to her at Akron Care Center, 991 Hwy 3, Akron, Iowa 51001.

Iowa caucus results

In spite of severe cold weather on January 15, 2024, with a high of 8 and a low of -7 degrees, 104 voters came to the St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Akron. Gary Horton set up the location; Alex Pick was elected chair with Pastor Susan Juilfs chosen as secretary.

New Horizons to celebrate Founders’ Day

New Horizons United Church of Christ is celebrating its 18th Founders’ Day, “The Plans I Have for You!” Sunday, Feb. 4. Tenets of the Church include mission, stewardship, church should be fun, and a place where people feel safe (as in, all are welcome) to worship.  In all, to glorify God!  New Horizons is located at 141 Reed Street, Akron, on the ground level of Ye Olde Opera House. The folks of New Horizons are grateful for their Church Home!

Auditions for ‘Jersey Boys’ announced

Akron Opera House has announced audition dates for the musical “Jersey Boys” with performance dates of April 11, 12, 13, and 14. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m.  Jan 31 and 6 p.m.  Feb 4, both at the opera house.  A large cast is needed, with cameo roles for both men and women.  All in high school and older are welcome!

Akron Chamber holds annual banquet

Even with the very chilly weather, there was a nice crowd attending the Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Jan. 20 at the Akron Golf Club. 

To start things off, President Lori Rabey welcomed everyone which was followed by a buffet with sliders, salads, and desserts.

Arctic blast hits area

During the recent winter storms last Thursday-Sunday, over a foot of snow or more fell around Akron and it was brutal. Along with the below zero temperatures and the high wind chills of -30+, it was almost impossible to get out or want to go out.

Even though it's kind of pretty, the snow caused much havoc on everone in the area. As a matter of fact, most of the country was hit with horrible weather. Mother Nature must have been pretty angry!

AOH announces dates for children’s production

Akron Opera House announced the dates for the 2024 children’s theater production of “King Arthur’s Quest” presented by Missoula Children’s Theatre. Performances are  March 2 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

‘Jersey Boys’ coming in April!

Akron-Westfield students spread holiday cheer to deployed marines

Akron-Westfield Elementary students demonstrated the true spirit of the holiday season by reaching out to deployed Marines, including their hometown hero, Jeremy Bosse, a 2020 graduate of AW currently stationed in Japan.

Big Band music and dancing returns to Akron Opera House

The sixteen-member Prairie Winds Jazz ensemble will return to the historic Akron Opera House with a big band and swing dance concert on Saturday, Feb. 3. The musicians from around the Siouxland area will perform a big band and swing dance concert at 7:30 p.m., with dance lessons presented by the Dordt College Swing Dance Club beginning at 6:30 p.m.
