The Akron Hometowner is looking for a motivated individual, passionate about local news and the city of Akron.

The publication is owned by Nelson Media Company. It’s been without an editor since Julie Ann Madden retired shortly after the NMC purchase.

The Community Foundation of Greater Plymouth County recently disbursed a total of $139,875 in grants to many organizations in the county including four from Akron.

Immanuel Lutheran Church holds confirmation 

It was a chilly night Oct. 31 but that didn’t stop all the interesting characters who invaded Akron from walking down Reed St. They all came for the annual Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s Halloween Parade led by Akron’s police chief, Bill Young. Following the parade, participants visited almost 20 trunks during Trunk or Treat and then went to residences for trick or treating. Oh what a night!

Almost 18 years ago, New Horizons United Church of Christ was founded as a mission based church.  Pastor Steve Jewett proposed the concept of sharing ten percent of the net proceeds from our four fundraisers with local organizations. Through the community's attendance, its support of New Horizons, our church should reciprocate. The idea was readily accepted!

Friendship & Service Club distributes funds

The GFWC Friendship & Service Club of Akron recently disbursed some funds from proceeds of the Scarecrow Festival to four groups at Akron-Westfield. Groups receiving funds were: National  History Day, $300; A-W Dance Team, $300; A-W FFA $300; and A-W Music Department $150.

There are school board positions open for the Akron-Westfield School District, and those who held the role before are hoping to represent once again.

Nick Mathistad, current At Large representative, Cory Tucker, District 4 representative, Kaylene Hawksin, District 5 representative, and Deb Jordt, District 6 representative, are running.

Akron’s mayoral election sees no names on ballot

With the local elections right around the corner, several questions remain about who will be serving as Akron’s mayor during the next term.

On November 7, the local elections for the city of Westfield will be held.

This year Jenny Hartman-Mendoza is running for the position of mayor. Hartman-Mendoza is running uncontested, and is likely to be elected for another term unless someone is able to conduct a successful write-in campaign.

On October 10, the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a new radio system for the Secondary Roads Department.

Westfield Congregational Church holds annual Harvest Supper

Connie Blake of Security National Bank of Akron was recently honored by the Iowa Bankers Association for more than 50 years of service at a bank. The award was presented to Blake during the IBA Annual Convention on Monday, Sept. 18, in Des Moines. Blake was one of 22 individuals recognized for reaching the 50-year service milestone.

Cross off another great Omelet Breakfast for the Akron Lions Club. The annual breakfast was held Oct. 28 at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Akron. The large crowd enjoyed building their own omelet complete with a cinnamon roll and beverage. Proceeds from the breakfast are used for scholarships, Iowa KidSight Eye Screening Program, and many other local, state, and international needs.
