Connie Blake of Security National Bank of Akron was recently honored by the Iowa Bankers Association for more than 50 years of service at a bank. The award was presented to Blake during the IBA Annual Convention on Monday, Sept. 18, in Des Moines. Blake was one of 22 individuals recognized for reaching the 50-year service milestone.

This year Jenny Hartman-Mendoza is running for the position of mayor. Hartman-Mendoza is running uncontested, and is likely to be elected for another term unless someone is able to conduct a successful write-in campaign.

With the local elections right around the corner, several questions remain about who will be serving as Akron’s mayor during the next term.

Akron-Westfield School Board candidates want your vote

Familiar faces are asking for your vote this Election Day.
There are school board positions open for the Akron-Westfield School District, and those who held the role before are hoping to represent once again.

Nick Mathistad, current At Large representative, Cory Tucker, District 4 representative, Kaylene Hawksin, District 5 representative, and Deb Jordt, District 6 representative, are running.

Work begins on A-W football field

Work on the Akron-Westfield football field began shortly after the last home game Oct. 13. All the bleachers, old track, and grandstand have been removed to make way for the new 8-lane track which will be built along with a new grandstand area with new bleachers and a new press box. A capital campaign to pay for the restrooms, concessions, and storage facility which are wanted, will be underway soon by the A-W Athletic Booster Club.
