Softball wins first postseason game, falls in semifinal

Akron-Westfield softball team won its opening round of postseason action at home July 9 against Trinity Christian winning 10-4 with a homerun by Lainey Schuknecht in the fifth. Next up, A-W traveled to Fonda July 12 to face Newell-Fonda falling to the Mustangs, 4-0, to end their season.

A-W baseball: District champions!

The Akron-Westfield baseball team is having a great post-season thus far. The Westerners won their first game in playoffs against Harris-Lake Park, 7-4, July 10 and then defeated Gehlen Catholic, 8-3, July 13 in the district championship, both at home. Team members received medals for being Class 1A District 1 champions.

A-W baseball is state qualifier, for the second time in school history!! Defeated Kingsley-Pierson, 13-0, July 16 to advance to the state tournament. #1 A-W will face #8 Bedford Monday, July 22 at 11 a.m. in Carroll at Merchants Park. Good Luck Westerners!

A-W softball ends regular season

The Ak ron-Westf ield softball team finished the regular season losing two non-conference games giving them an overall record of 20-6.

The girls lost to Western Christian, 4-3, July 2 and lost to Ridge View, 6-3, July 3.

A-W baseball remains No. 1!

The Akron-Westfield baseball team ended the regular season with four wins bringing their overall record to 24-3 and ending No. 1 in Class 1A. A-W also won the War Eagle Conference by themselves, the first time in 34 years.

Wins came July 1 against OABCIG, 3-0, July 2 against Western Christian, 4-2, July 3 against Ridge View, 13-2, and July 5 against Trinity Christian, 12-2.

Akron-Westfield softball won four games last week and had one loss to unbeaten Remsen St. Mary’s. The team’s conference record is 10-1 with an overall record of 19-4 putting them second in the conference behind RSM.

The Akron-Westfield baseball team had a great couple weeks in spite of the weather, winning three games but ending with a close, 3-2, loss to Remsen St. Mary’s. The loss to No. 4 ranked RSM came in the last inning in a non-conference game. A-W had defeated RSM earlier in the conference match-up game, 7-1. The game with Hinton June 27 was postponed.

The Akron-Westfield softball team won two and lost one last week. Wins came June 3 against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS), 7-1, and June 7 South O’Brien (SOS), 5-4. The loss was June 4 against Remsen St. Mary’s (RSM), 10-2.

​​​​​​​Boys go 3-0 for week

The Akron-Westfield baseball team won its three games last week: June 3 against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS), 25-1, in five innings, June 4 against Alta-Aurelia (AA), 15-0, in five innings, and June 7 against South O’Brien (SOS), 10-0. The June 6 game scheduled for Central Lyon was canceled.

Six A-W golfers make All Conference

Six Akron-Westfield golfers made the 2024 War Eagle All Conference golf team.

For the boys, Carter Wilken, Jackson Marnach, and Jackson Neubrand all made the First Team. The team finished first in the conference with a record of 19-1 and finished second at the state tournament.
