A-W boys basketball nearly pulls upset at RSM

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team knew they were in for a battle as traveled to 6th ranked Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.  Not only were the Hawks 9-3 on the season but they were coming off two straight losses and probably more than ready to take out some frustration on the Westerners.

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team didn’t seem to be bothered by the hectic schedule over the last week.  The Westerners won four games in seven days and were looking to extend the streak to five in a row as they traveled to Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.

Lennon & Utesch keep winning for A-W

Khai Utesch and Josi Lennon continue to rack up wins for the Akron-Westfield girls wrestling team this season.  Both were credited with two wins as the Westerners lost to Sioux City North and Council Bluffs Lincoln on Jan. 16.

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team was coming off a solid win against South O’Brien when they hosted winless MMCRU on Jan. 13, hoping to start a small winning streak and keep the Royals winless on the season.

The tough stretch of quality opponents continued for the A-W boys basketball team as they hosted MMCRU on Jan. 13.  Since returning from the holiday break, A-W has faced three opponents (Hinton, South O’Brien, and MMCRU) who have a combined 26-5 record.

The Akron-Westfield JV boys wrestling team took part in the Le Mars Tournament on Jan. 19 and had an impressive showing. Jayden Beyer and Thomas Brown both finished second in their weight class while Wyatt Dumas and Aken Marieu both took home third place honors.

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team is continuing to improve as the season moves along.  On Jan. 16, the Westerners picked up their seventh win of the season as they beat Alcester-Hudson on the road 30-16.

Historic night for A-W Girls Wrestling

It’s been a historic season for the A-W girls wrestling program and on Jan. 9 they added another piece to the record book.  This season is the first for A-W girls program on the mat and they walked into the gym on Jan. 9 to host their first ever tournament in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

The A-W boys wrestling team had a trio of wrestlers make it to the championship match in their weight class at the GTRA Invitational on Jan. 11.

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team knew when the holiday break was over, they had better be ready to shake off the rust quickly.  The Westerners had road games against Hinton and South O’Brien in a four-day span; those two teams were a combined a 12-3 on the season heading into the 2025 portion of the season.

The A-W girls basketball team knew what they were up against and the challenge in front of them. Hinton came into the match-up with Akron-Westfield on Jan. 7 undefeated and ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A.

A-W girls wrestling opens second half

The Akron-Westfield girls wrestling team began the new year at the Orab Invitational on Jan. 4. The Westerners finished in 12th place overall with 56 points.  Josi Lennon led A-W with a third-place finish in her weight class. Kaylee Hebert took home fourth place and Isabelle Utesch finished in fifth place.

The Akron-Westfield boys wrestling team opened the new year in a quad meet at Sibley-Ocheyedan on Jan. 2.  Brodie Hoffman and Nathan Schoenfelder led the Westerners with two wins in the meet. A-W fell to Estherville Lincoln Central, Sibley-Ocheyedan and Central Lyon/George Little Rock.

 

A-W girls fall to Beresford

 

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team traveled to Beresford on Jan. 6 for their first game since the holiday break and lost 48-34.

The Watchdogs jumped out to the early lead, outscoring A-W 16-7 in the first quarter and were able to extend the lead to 10 points at the half, 25-15.

It was an up and down start to the season for the Akron-Westfield boys basketball team, but they hope a big win before the holiday break will send them into the new year with confidence.
