Opera House fundraiser for building fund

The Akron Opera House Board of Directors has begun fundraising efforts for the Opera House Building Fund. 

Budget statement mailing from county auditor

Property owners in Plymouth County and in all of Iowa will soon receive a new mailing from their county auditor which will contain information about the proposed property tax rates for the next fiscal year. This past legislative session, Iowa legislators created a new law; Iowa Code 24.2A, which requires that a budget letter/statement be mailed to property owners by March 20th of each year.

A-W Pops Concert

The Akron-Westfield music department held its annual Pops Concert March 14 under the direction of Ryan Schuknecht and accompanist Kathy Johnson. Featured were the middle school choir, high school choir, A-W Jazz Too, and A-W Jazz Choir.

Individual speech does well at state

The 13 Akron-Westfield Individual Speech students did well at the state individual speech contest in Carroll March 9. The group brought home twelve 1 ratings, one 2 rating, and six advanced to the All-State Festival March 2 at the University of Iowa.

The Spot celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

The Spot Espresso Bar & Cafe in Akron was the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day March 17. In honor of the holiday, Reuben sandwiches, Irish Tacos and green drinks were available in addition to the regular menu. Along with food, you could play Bingo or make a coffee filter flower.

 

2025 ALL-CLASS REUNION PLANNING IS UNDERWAY

The second planning meeting for the Akron/Akron-Westfield  All-Class Reunion will be held at the Akron Library meeting room at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Many items were put on the schedule for the June 27, 28, 2025 reunion but more ideas and volunteers are still needed. If you are interested in assisting in any way, you are most welcome to join in these planning sessions.

Bins being removed in Westfield

If you have driven through Westfield on Highway 12, you probably noticed that grain bins are being removed along the railroad tracks in that location.

The bins are owned by Ken Less. It is estimated that the bins are probably over 50 years old. He no longer had a use for them.

First Adult Prom held

The first Adult Prom was held March 2 at the Akron Golf Club. Many couples enjoyed reliving their Prom. Some were all decked out in Prom wear. The theme for the evening was “Under the Sea,” with decorations and lighting depicting the theme. The committee hopes to have this as an annual event with more and more people enjoying Prom. In the photo (l-r) Mitch DeRocher, Traci DeRocher, Jordan Bittinger, and Heath Lee enjoyed the evening.
