Back To School With Derek Briggs

The summer season is quickly winding down and soon Akron- Westfield students and educators will be back at it once again.

It was just a year ago that school leaders broke ground for a multi- million dollar revamp. The progress is ongoing and Superintendent Derek Briggs explains that the improvements will continue throughout the year.

Driver's Education

As the new school year speeds closer, parents and guardians plan to enroll their children in driver's ed. Julie Bundy has been teaching driver’s ed since 2004. She currently teaches the course at Akron-Westfield Community School, West Sioux Community, and Boyden-Hull Community School. She teaches driver’s ed on Saturday mornings from 8-11 am starting after Labor Day in Akron. The program costs $350 unless the student is on free and reduced lunch status.

School Registration

School registration looks different at Akron Westfield Community School this year. With the ongoing construction, registration will be available online from August 1-8, 2023. Staff will be available to help over the phone at (712) 568-2020. The first day of school will be on August 23, 2023. Though this date is a Wednesday, students will not be dismissed early. It will be a full day.

For the first time in 22 years, the Akron Hometowner will have a new owner starting this week.  Chris Nelson, President and CEO of Nelson Media Company, is officially taking over the publication from Dodie Hook, who started the newspaper back in 2001.  It’s his fourth paper he has purchased in the last year, the third in Iowa.
