Akron Area Chamber of Commerce announces numerous events and promotions for the Holidays

Earlier this month, the Akron Area Chamber of Commerce released information on several events and promotions that will be taking place through the end of the year. With businesses and organizations that are members of the Chamber offering programs with the goal to encourage shopping local, and raising awareness of community organizations and projects, the highlight of the announcement would be the return of Christmas events.

Board of Supervisors edits turbine policy

On October 24, the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors approved a new revision for the county’s zoning ordinance.

The new ordinance will require that a setback equal to three and a half time the apex of wind turbines within the county. While early attempt to install solar and wind plants is still going on, the board wants to make the setback for a tower between 550 and 600 feet and make the setback, 1925 and 2100 feet setback

Preliminary election results are in

The Community Foundation of Greater Plymouth County recently disbursed a total of $139,875 in grants to many organizations in the county including four from Akron.

The GFWC Friendship & Service Club of Akron recently disbursed some funds from proceeds of the Scarecrow Festival to four groups at Akron-Westfield. Groups receiving funds were: National  History Day, $300; A-W Dance Team, $300; A-W FFA $300; and A-W Music Department $150.

New Horizons donates to Lions Club

Almost 18 years ago, New Horizons United Church of Christ was founded as a mission based church.  Pastor Steve Jewett proposed the concept of sharing ten percent of the net proceeds from our four fundraisers with local organizations. Through the community's attendance, its support of New Horizons, our church should reciprocate. The idea was readily accepted!

Akron is invaded on Halloween

It was a chilly night Oct. 31 but that didn’t stop all the interesting characters who invaded Akron from walking down Reed St. They all came for the annual Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s Halloween Parade led by Akron’s police chief, Bill Young. Following the parade, participants visited almost 20 trunks during Trunk or Treat and then went to residences for trick or treating. Oh what a night!

Akron Lions hold annual Omelet Breakfast

Cross off another great Omelet Breakfast for the Akron Lions Club. The annual breakfast was held Oct. 28 at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Akron. The large crowd enjoyed building their own omelet complete with a cinnamon roll and beverage. Proceeds from the breakfast are used for scholarships, Iowa KidSight Eye Screening Program, and many other local, state, and international needs.
