Cole St. Pierre of Akron placed seventh at the 2024 Iowa AAU State Wrestling Tournament in his division Feb. 24 and 25 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. A-W youth wrestlers Joshua Webb and Carter Utesch also wrestled at the state tournament but did not place.

The West Sioux Educational Foundation is hosting a free public event on suicide, mental health, and substance use issues Tuesday, March 5, 7 p.m., in the West Sioux High School Auditorium in Hawarden. The presentation by Dr. Melissa Dittberner (Dr. Mo) will focus on the stigma surrounding suicide, mental health, and substance use disorders.

The weather sure can drastically change in less than a day. On Monday, Feb. 26, the thermometer showed 70 degrees and plants were put out to enjoy the sunshine. However, about 19 hours later on Tuesday morning, the thermometer was showing 30 degrees, a 40 degree drop! In fact, Monday evening people were warned on television news to bring inside plants back into the house.

Riley Dennison sworn in as new councilperson

At the Feb. 19 Westfield City Council meeting Riley Dennison was sworn in as a new councilperson. He replaces Kyle Richards who moved.

Westfield Congregational Church held its first of three fish/chicken dinners Feb. 23. The menu consists of fish/chicken strips, au gratin potatoes, corn fritters, cole slaw, roll, and homemade pies and desserts. The next two are March 8 and 22, 5-7 p.m. at the church in Westfield. Walk-in and to-go orders only. There will be no phone orders taken.

The Friendship & Service Club, a General Federated Women’s Club, has announced its 2024 writing contest winners, in both poems and short stories, from grades one through twelve at Akron-Westfield. Eight entries are moving on to the state contest.

Winners in the most recent Akron Area Chamber of Commerce’s Receipt Rebate promotion have been drawn. Winners will receive up to $40 in Chamber Bucks depending on the amount of their receipt. Around $500 in Chamber Bucks was awarded. Winners can pick up their Chamber Bucks at Security National Bank.
