Henrich competes in state swim meet

Akron-Westfield senior Hunter Henrich closed out his high school swimming career at the IHSAA State Meet in Iowa City on Feb. 14-15.

Swimming for Sioux City, Henrich finished 21st in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.21 seconds and 30th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.12 seconds.

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team ended the regular season and had to quickly turn the page to the regional playoffs.

Jacobs signs to play volleyball at Mount Mercy

Akron-Westfield senior Josie Jacobs has signed to play college volleyball at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. “I looked around at schools I thought were interesting and had my major, pre-law,” said Jacobs. “I visited Waldorf and Mount Mercy, and I realized going to school in a bigger city was important and the facilities were really nice.”

It’s no surprise Akron-Westfield wresters Conner Morrow and Nathan Schoenfelder earned a trip to the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.

Tammy Mae Popken

Tammy Mae Popken, 56, of rural Akron, Iowa, peacefully acquired her heavenly wings on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City, Nevada following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2025, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. Reverend Trish Underberg will officiate.
