Akron-Westfield to receive funds from Kenneth Frerichs' estate

At the Akron-Westfield (A-W) School Board’s January meeting, it was announced that the district will receive approximately $463,000 from the Kenneth Frerichs estate. Frerichs was a lifelong resident of Akron and a 1966 graduate of Akron High School. 

Friendship & Service Club donates to several organizations

The Friendship & Service Club recently presented donations to Akron Care Center, Akron Children's Center, and Akron Park & Recreation Board. “We are proud to support these great organizations and the work they are doing in our community,” said Club member Lisa Harris.

A-W JV girls basketball keeps rolling

 

The Akron-Westfield JV girls basketball team continues to pile up the wins this season. The Westerners beat Lawton-Bronson 44-23 as Brooklyn Hughes scored 20 points and Tess Frerichs added 10 points in the victory.

A-W girls basketball gets key win against Gehlen

This is not the best time of the season to deal with injuries and illness as the post season is just over two weeks away. Unfortunately, that is the story for the Akron-Westfield girls basketball team.  The Westerners lost a pair of starters against Lawton-Bronson due to injuries and lost the game 53-47 on Jan. 27.

A-W boys basketball picks up win at West Sioux

After snapping a two-game losing streak on Jan. 24 with a win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn the Akron-Westfield boys basketball team was hoping to start a streak in the other direction. The Westerners hit the road for a battle against Lawton-Bronson on Jan. 27.

Schoenfelder & Morrow perfect in Mapleton

The Akron-Westfield boys wrestling team traveled to Mapleton for a quad on Jan. 28 and once again Conner Morrow and Nathan Schoenfelder had outstanding performances.

Lennon returns to state with lofty goal

Josie Lennon is right where she wants to be.  The Akron-Westfield junior is headed back to the state wrestling tournament for a third straight season.  Lennon won the IGHSAU Class 1A Region 6 title in the 120-pound class on Jan. 31.

Lennon wins regional title

It’s been an outstanding season on the mat for Akron-Westfield wrestler Josie Lennon. The junior has dominated opponents this season with a 24-3 record in the 120-pound division.  The only thing missing from her resume was a trip to the state tournament.  On Jan.
