Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Honeyhill Shelties, Akron is proud to be the home of Summit. Summit is the reserve best in the all-breed show, multiple best in specialty show, and grand champion gold. Summit goes by Oakdale Honeyhill Vantage Point while competing.

Summit is a top American Kennel Club (AKC) Grand Champion.

National Iowa Day in Akron

National Iowa Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring the vibrant culture, history, and accomplishments of our state. This year, the celebration will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025.

The Prairie Winds Jazz Big Band and Swing Dance Concert on Feb. 1, 2025, was a resounding success, drawing 150 attendees to the historic Akron Opera House. The talented big band performed a lively set, showcasing a variety of jazz standards and swing classics that had everyone on the dance floor.

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team had their season end on Feb. 17 after a 56-37 loss to Gehlen Catholic in the Class 1A District playoffs.  “We started hot right away with 14 points in the first quarter,” said head coach Steven Husk. “We gave up 21 points and our defense was not as good as what it was in games past and then certainly our offense struggled after the first quarter.”

The Akron-Westfield Youth Wrestling Club will be busy at the Iowa AAU Kids State Tournament, Iowa Super Pee Wee State Championship and AAU Girl’s State Championship.

For the second year in a row, Matthew Swancutt is headed to the state bowling tournament.  On Feb. 18, Swancutt qualified for state with a 637 series in 2A IHSAA Qualifying Meet in Denison.
