The Akron Hometowner extends a warm welcome to Hailey Wilken, who is a new preschool teacher at Akron-Westfield (A-W). Her classroom is right down the hall from her mother Tina Wilken’s classroom, who teaches fourth grade.

The Akron Opera House’s Board of Directors works to identify and pursue grant opportunities. Because of their work, the Akron Opera House has raised significant funds through donations and grant funding.

The Akron American Legion Post held its annual essay contest for the Akron-Westfield fifth graders Nov. 2024. Ruth Colt's essay won first place in the competition, followed by Aria Troubaugh and Ty Naslund.

A-W JV girls basketball wins two of three

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team is continuing to improve as the season moves along.  On Jan. 16, the Westerners picked up their seventh win of the season as they beat Alcester-Hudson on the road 30-16.

Morrow earns third place

Connor Morrow finished third place in the 106-pound division of the Herb Irgens Invitational. The event took place on Jan. 24-25 in Ida Grove. Morrow lost his semifinal match but rebounded to beat Leyton Elmquist of Audubon and Carver Hinz of Jesup to grab third place for the Westerners and earn 16 team points.

Four A-W girls wrestlers earn top 10 finishes

Josi Lennon continues to pick up wins for the Akron-Westfield girls wrestling team.  Lennon finished third in the 120-pound division as the Westerners took home 12th place as a team with 48 points in the Hinton/SBL Tournament on Jan. 25.

A-W boys basketball nearly pulls upset at RSM

The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team knew they were in for a battle as traveled to 6th ranked Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.  Not only were the Hawks 9-3 on the season but they were coming off two straight losses and probably more than ready to take out some frustration on the Westerners.

A-W girls basketball drops close game to RSM

 

The Akron-Westfield girls basketball team didn’t seem to be bothered by the hectic schedule over the last week.  The Westerners won four games in seven days and were looking to extend the streak to five in a row as they traveled to Remsen St. Mary’s on Jan. 21.
