Westfield Lagoon Berm Repair Update

County Engineer Tom Rohe provided an email update on damage in Westfield’s Drainage District. As discussed at the Sept. 24 Board of Supervisors meeting, both Westfield’s lagoon berm and a dike on adjacent private property owned by Bill Michael are in need of repairs.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer will touch most people’s lives at some point. An average of 21 women are diagnosed annually in Plymouth County, according to the National Cancer Institute. Throughout Iowa, 2,692 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Great Akron Scarecrow Festival’s first round of donations and Scarecrow Contest Winners

The Friendship & Service Club orchestrated a successful annual Great Akron Scarecrow Festival, collaborating with 50 vendors and raising $10,000. The festival also awarded various prizes for the Scarecrow Decorating Contest and entertained locals.

Quarterly Ambulance & Fire Reports Released

The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors held their weekly meeting on Oct. 8. All board members were present, except for Gary Horton.

The Sheriff’s Dept. presented the quarterly report for ambulance and fire calls.

• Ambulance calls in Akron for July, Aug., and Sept. were 25, 22, and 22, respectively, for a quarterly total of 69 calls.

A-W finds winning way against Alta-Aurelia

It’s been a season filled with close calls and one or two mistakes at key times costing the A-W football team wins. Against Alta-Aurelia on Oct. 11, things finally went the Westerners’ way. They put together their most complete game of the season in a 29-15 win over the Warriors.

Westerners win 5 set battle against Gehelen Catholic

The Akron-Westfield volleyball team certainly earned their No. 10 ranking with an 11-game winning streak, but to keep the streak alive they needed to end another streak in the process. Heading into the match on Oct. 8 against Gehlen Catholic, the Westerners had not won a match against the Jays since 2016.
