October proclaimed Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Since the mid-1980s, October has been observed as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the U.S. At the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors Meeting on Oct. 1, Chairman Don Kass read the following proclamation:

An adventure for tiny tots

Roof repair in the works for Helping Hands Thrift Store

High wind speeds at the end of August and the beginning of September damaged the roof of the Helping Hands Thrift Store. According to Curt Harris, the active President of the Akron Children’s Center, the building experienced soffit damage.

The soffit, an essential component of a building’s exterior, is the material that lines the underside of the roof overhang.

A-W FFA Hope Closet opens

The Annual Monster Mash event provides fun for all

The Akron Public Library will host its most popular annual event, the Monster Mash, on Oct. 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event features a costume contest, games, prizes, spooky books, movie time, and snacks.

Mary Louise Attig, 93

We honor the life and accomplishments of Mary Louise Attig, known to her family and close friends as “Skeeze.”  Mary died at Unity Point - St. Lukes Medical Center in Sioux City, IA on October 13, 2024 at the age of 93. Mary was transported there from her residence at Akron Care Center after a short illness. Her family appreciates the excellent care provided during her stay at Akron Care Center and at Unity Point - St. Lukes. 

Boie Shines for A-W Junior High Cross Country

Boie and Schram set personal bests

The Akron-Westfield junior high cross country had a pair of runners with impressive showings on Oct. 3 at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by South O’Brien.

Saelah Boie and Teygan Schram both had personal bests in the race with Boie running an amazing race that certainly caught the attention of head coach Jerad Bruget.

Westerners drop close battle at MMCRU

A-W falls to 0-6

It’s become a season long theme and one that the Akron-Westfield football team was hoping would change. Unfortunately, the trend continued against MMCRU on October 4 as the bounces and breaks didn’t fall the Westerners way in tough 14-7 loss.
